Rocket League rank distribution: what percent of players are in each rank
Short answer: the average ranked Rocket League player is Gold 3 in 3v3, Gold 3 in 2v2 and Gold 2 in 1v1. Diamond is the top 15.7% of 3v3. Champion is the top 3.5%. Grand Champion is about 1 in 400.
These are Psyonix's own end of season numbers for Season 23, so they are counts of real placed players, not a survey. Read each number as "the share of ranked players at or above this rank". If you are Platinum 1 in 1v1, you are in the top 29.4% of that playlist.

Where most players actually are
Gold is the biggest tier by a distance: about 38% of 3v3 players sit somewhere in Gold 1 to Gold 3. Here is how 3v3 splits by whole tier:
- Bronze: 3.7% of players
- Silver: 18.9% of players
- Gold: 38.1% of players
- Platinum: 23.7% of players
- Diamond: 12.1% of players
- Champion: 3.3% of players
- Grand Champion: 0.25% of players
- Supersonic Legend: 0.003% of players
So if you are Platinum, you are above most ranked players. It just does not feel like it, because everyone in your lobbies is Platinum too.
Why your 2v2 rank is higher
Every playlist ranks you only against the people who play it, and 2v2's numbers run higher (the usual explanation is that it draws the most committed ranked players): Diamond 1 is the top 25.5% of 2v2 against the top 15.7% of 3v3. 1v1 runs the other way. With no teammate covering your mistakes, Diamond 1 there is the top 4.1%. A Platinum 1v1 player is a better player than the rank name suggests.
What the numbers do not tell you
A percentile tells you where you stand, not why you stopped climbing. Two Gold 3 players can be stuck for completely different reasons: one is boost starved every rotation, the other wins every 50 and then ball chases the follow up. The rank is the same, the fix is not.
The jump that matters most is Platinum to Diamond, where the share of players drops by more than half. That is usually where mechanics stop being the limit and the boring stuff, rotation, boost and decisions, starts deciding games. If you are stuck right there, this is the guide on why.
